New office in Sapporo to open in July: MOFA

Taipei, May 5 (CNA) The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) confirmed Tuesday that it will open a new office in Sapporo on Japan's northern island of Hokkaido on July 27.
“The new branch in Sapporo, Hokkaido is scheduled to open July 27, and will aim to provide more services to Taiwanese tourists, ” according to a diplomatic source, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
“Legislative Yuan Speaker Wang Jin-pyng is planning to attend the opening ceremony of the new office. However, details regarding who will head the office and its scale are yet to be finalized, ”the source said.
Lee Hung-chun, a legislator of the ruling Kuomintang and chairman of the Legislature's Taiwan-Japan Exchanges Amity Group, said Tuesday that the new branch in Sapporo will better serve the needs of Taiwanese tourists and businessmen.
“The new office in Sapporo is the first one set up after President Ma Ying-jeou took office last May. It can be viewed as good will demonstrated by Japan,”Lee said.
According to Lee, Wang will also visit Tokyo to conduct parliamentary diplomacy and meet with members of the Sino-Japanese Diet Members Conference in July.
Taiwanese tourists average more than 280,000 visits to Hokkaido a year, far more than the 18,000 visits to Taiwan by Hokkaido residents, statistics show.
Taiwan has designated 2009 as the year for bolstering Taiwan's special partnership with Japan. The two countries recently reached a working holiday agreement, which is scheduled to be launched June 1.
