TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs today put Portugal in yellow travel alert list for a confirmed H1N1 flu case in the southern European country.

Lo Yu-chung (羅由中), director general of the Bureau of Consular Affairs under the MOFA, told the press conference this morning that the MOFA announced the decision based on the latest epidemic condition around the world publicized by the Department of Health, following coordination with the Central Epidemic Command Center established last week in the wake of the deadly new epidemic.

As of today, said Lo, only Mexico has been listed in red alert. 21 countries and regions have been given a yellow warning such as the United States, Canada, Hong Kong, and South Korea.

As for outside criticism that the MOFA reacted slowly in adjusting the travel alert, which affected the travel tour organization, Lo replied that the travel alert issued by the MOFA was not legal-binding and only served as a reference for travelers to plan their trips.

If any domestic groups quoted the travel alert as the basis of change of agreement, they should bear full responsibility for any consequences, said Lo. The standard of travel tour refund should be agreed upon between the Tourism Bureau of the Cabinet-level Ministry of Transportation and travel agencies.

The MOFA travel alert is in three levels: yellow warned travelers to take necessary precautions; orange suggested that travelers suspend trips; red advised travelers against trips to the area. Any latest data is made public on the website of the Bureau of Consular Affairs.
