California teams win national science bowl

A team of five students from a Sacramento, California, high school recognized a type of astronomical charts as a Hertzsprung-Russell diagram and used it to find a star like the Earth's sun. The feat brought them victory Monday in the U.S. Department of Energy's annual National Science Bowl.
The group from Mira Loma High School, who defeated 66 other teams in the contest, won a trip to trip to the International Science School at the University of Sydney in July.
Team captain Rishi Kulkarni, 17, said the team came in second place last year, and the returning members set out to win in 2009 by splitting up most of the subjects and using college textbooks to prepare.
Kulkarni said he and his teammates _ Edward Lee, 17, Andrew Chen, 15, Heather Yee, 16, and Sriram Pendyala, 15 _ will celebrate with a party.
