Former Brazil coach Leao fired by Atletico Mineiro

Atletico Mineiro has fired former Brazil coach Emerson Leao after the team was outscored 9-1 in its last three matches and lost the Minas Gerais state title.
Leao was released a day after Atletico drew 1-1 with Cruzeiro in the second leg of the state final. The 1971 Brazilian champion had lost 5-0 to its rival in the first match and needed a victory by five goals on Sunday.
Last week, Atletico fell 3-0 to Vitoria in the first leg of the round of 16 of the Brazilian Cup. The second leg is Wednesday and Atletico needs to win by three goals.
Leao, a former Brazil goalkeeper who coached the national team in 2002, was replaced by Celso Roth, who was fired by Gremio last month.
Roth led Gremio to a runner-up finish to Sao Paulo in last year's Brazilian league. He coached Atletico Mineiro in 2003, leading the club to 22 wins, seven losses and 11 draws.
