Taiwan thanks St. Lucia for backing its WHO role

Taiwan's ambassador to St. Lucia is praising the tiny country's leader for supporting the Asian island's newly granted observer status in the World Health Assembly.
Ambassador Tom Chou expressed "profound gratitude" Monday to Prime Minister Stephenson King for backing Taipei's bid to participate as an observer at this year's meeting of the WHA, the decision-making body for the U.N. World Health Organization.
Chou said without allies like St. Lucia, it would not have been possible for Taiwan to take part.
China and Taiwan split amid civil war in 1949. Beijing normally objects to Taiwan's participation in international groups.
Taiwan announced last month it had persuaded China to let it take part in the U.N. body.
