Gayle arrives from IPL 2 days before England test

West Indies captain Chris Gayle arrived in England from South Africa on Monday, just two days before the first test at Lord's and with coach John Dyson doubting he would be fully prepared after playing in the IPL.
Gayle stayed behind to play an extra Twenty20 game for Kolkata and has had little time to overcome jet-lag and then practice for totally different test match conditions.
"You get medical guys saying you need time to recover from flights, coaches saying you need time to practice and prepare properly for the series," said Dyson, whose team also plays England at Chester-le-Street in a second test May 14-18.
"Chris is a big-match player. He handles pressure, all sorts of it, very well. He's played magnificent cricket in all forms of the game over the last 12 months. He says he's in good touch, seeing the ball well."
But Dyson believed that Gayle's extra IPL appearance, which was approved by the West Indies Cricket Board, had delayed his preparation for the test.
"Medical science says that everyone gets jet-lag. If your flying time is 10, 12 hours you probably need a couple of days to recover properly from the flight," the West Indies coach said.
"Then you need a couple of nets and probably a practice game. That would be the minimum I would see as being ideal. I, ideally, would like more time. But we have to work with what's going and, at the moment, that's what's going."
England's IPL stars, Kevin Pietersen, Paul Collingwood and Ravi Bopara, were back before the weekend while West Indies paceman Fidel Edwards only arrived on Sunday.
"We all knew that the IPL was on and we knew that the players would be arriving when they have _ late," said Dyson, whose players drew their first two tour matches and then lost by 10 wickets to England's back up Lions team. "I suppose this is something the (world governing body) ICC will look at as time goes on."
