Kiefer advances into 2nd round at BMW Open

Sixth-seeded Nicolas Kiefer rallied to beat Ernests Gulbis of Latvia 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 in wet conditions Monday to reach the second round of the BMW Open.
Kiefer, who at 31 is 11 years older than Gulbis, is playing the clay-court tournament for the first time since 2002.
"Clay and I, we'll never be the best of friends," the German said. "I'll cross myself three times when it's over."
Kiefer was down 3-1 in the second set when he began his comeback.
"It was cold, it was drizzling, heavy balls _ it's going to take a bit longer in such conditions," Kiefer said.
Philipp Kohlschreiber, the 2007 champion, also advanced when Bjorn Phau had to retire because of a hand injury while trailing 6-2, 2-1 in an all-German match.
In other first-round matches, Mikhail Youzhni of Russia defeated Ivo Minar of the Czech Republic 6-3, 7-6 (5) and Jeremy Chardy of France beat Evgeny Korolev of Russia 6-3, 6-3.
Defending champion and top-seeded Fernando Gonzalez has pulled out because of an ankle injury.
