Chennai reach 178-3 against Deccan in IPL

Captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni hit an unbeaten 58 and opener Matthew Hayden a quick-fire 43 as the Chennai Super Kings scored 178-3 against the Deccan Chargers in the Indian Premier League on Monday.
Dhoni hit six boundaries and a six, sharing a 54-run stand for the third wicket with Suresh Raina, who faced 19 balls for his 32 runs at Buffalo Park.
Chennai looked on course for a big score after Hayden (43 off 26 balls) and fellow opener Murali Vijay (31 off 33 balls) put on 61 runs for the first wicket.
Hayden, the IPL's leading run-scorer, smashed five boundaries and three sixes, mainly over long on and long off. The Australian was dismissed in the seventh over by medium pacer Shoaib Ahmed, who gave him a little room with a slower ball and had him caught at short third man by Rudra Singh.
Dhoni and Vijay then added 38 runs for the second wicket before Vijay failed to clear the boundary rope and was caught by Dwayne Bravo in the deep in the 13th over with Chennai on 99-2.
Dhoni and Raina's third wicket stand then lifted Chennai to a defendable total. Raina was the last wicket to fall, caught by Dwayne Smith in the 18 the over as he attempted to hit Singh over long on.
