City rejects merger with county
The Kaohsiung City Council rejected a proposal for a merger with Kaohsiung County yesterday, though the southern city's government is still considering a second attempt.
Mayor Chen Chu, a senior member of the Democratic Progressive Party, said the region would lose its competitiveness without a merger. She refuted fears that merging with the county would be a drain on the city's social, education and police resources.
The merger proposal received 20 votes out of 44, not enough to be accepted.
Impressive show
Taiwanese delegates impressed many foreign participants in an international walking event in the Belgian beach resort of Blankenberge with aboriginal dancing and exotic folk arts Sunday.
Taiwan is featured as the theme country in this year's International Two-Day Walk of Flanders, which opened Saturday.
On the second day of the walking event, now in its 40th year, the Taiwanese delegation set up a Taiwan booth at Blankenberge's Grote Market for traditional arts performance and exhibition of handicrafts.
The Taiwanese delegation, composed of more than 100 members, performed aboriginal dances, tea ceremony, paper hand fan painting and weaving of insects out of straws, attracting huge crowds of spectators and winning much acclaim.
