Cathay Pacific jumps as HK travel withstands swine flu

Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd., Hong Kong's biggest carrier, jumped the most in six months after saying reservations had withstood a swine-flu case in the city.
The carrier surged 11 percent to HK$10.00 in Hong Kong trading, the biggest intraday gain since Oct. 30. Affiliate Air China Ltd., the world's biggest airline by market value, rose 9.5 percent to HK$4.03 at the lunchtime trading break.
"There haven't been any unusual movements in our bookings or traffic," Carolyn Leung, a Cathay Pacific spokeswoman, said by phone yesterday after a Mexican man on May 1 became Hong Kong's first confirmed swine-flu case. The authorities reacted by quarantining a hotel, its guests and staff for seven days.
Cathay Pacific tumbled last week amid concerns that the spreading swine-flu outbreak may hit airlines already suffering from slowing demand amid the global recession.
