EU Parliament calls for release of US journalist

The European Parliament has appealed to Iran to release "without conditions" U.S. journalist Roxana Saberi, who is accused by Iran of spying for the United States.
Parliament President Hans-Gert Poettering says the 785 member European Union assembly is calling for the "immediate" release of Saberi.
He says the EU parliament is "deeply concerned" over Saberi's plight and says her case shows the "dramatic situation of human rights in Iran."
The American journalist has been on a hunger strike for two weeks to protest her eight-year jail sentence.
Washington has called the espionage allegations against Saberi baseless and demanded her immediate release. Iranian authorities have promised a fair review of her appeal.
Poettering raised the issue at the start of the EU parliament's session on Monday.
