81 unusual projects get $100K in Gates grants

A tomato that delivers antiviral drugs when eaten? How about a fungus that acts like a head cold for malaria-carrying mosquitoes?
These are among 81 projects awarded $100,000 by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to develop unconventional and often strange ideas for global health research.
The five-year grants are designed to encourage scientists to pursue bold ideas that could lead to future breakthroughs.
The Seattle foundation announced the grants Monday to researchers in 17 countries. It is the second round of Grand Challenges Explorations grants. The foundation is accepting applications for the third round until May 28.
