UN urges closer monitoring of swine flu in pigs

The United Nations is calling on countries to closely monitor pigs for swine flu after pigs in Canada were infected with the virus.
The U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization says pigs and farmers should restrict their movements if the animals show signs of respiratory illness, until a diagnosis is made. In addition, farmers shouldn't work if they have any flu-like symptoms.
FAO issued the appeal Monday after pigs in the Canadian province of Alberta were infected with the new swine flu virus. The beasts were thought to have been infected by a Canadian farm worker who recently visited Mexico and got sick.
The Rome-based AO stressed there was no need to kill pigs and that the virus cannot be transmitted to humans by eating pork or pork products.
