Macedonia journalists protest punitive lawsuits

Several hundred journalists are gathering in the Macedonian capital's main square to protest what they describe as excessively punitive lawsuits that are threatening press freedom.
The chairman of the Macedonian Journalists' Association, Robert Popovski, says more than 160 lawsuits against journalists are currently pending or being heard in the courts.
He says lawsuits have created a "grave situation" for Macedonian journalists, who work in fear of losing their livelihoods.
Protesters at Monday's peaceful rally, held on World Press Freedom Day, called for judicial reforms regarding slander cases, and for media owners to provide journalists greater legal protection.
