Gates plans to reassure allies on Iran outreach

Defense Secretary Robert Gates says the United States wants to reassure Mideast allies about its diplomatic outreach to Iran, and says gains ultimately may not be possible.
Gates is flying to Egypt, the first stop on a Mideast tour before he moves on to Saudi Arabia. He said part of his mission will be to soothe Saudis who may be worried about U.S. efforts to engage Tehran.
He said he hopes any U.S. outreach to Iran will increase security throughout the region.
But Gates downplayed the possibility that talks with Iran will go very far.
He noted concerns in the region that "may draw on an exaggerated sense of what's possible."
And he said Obama administration officials are "pretty realistic and will be pretty tough minded if we still encounter a closed fist."
