Turkish president calls Azerbaijan's leader

President Abdullah Gul's office says the Turkish leader has spoken to Azerbaijan's President Ilham Aliev about an accord to normalize ties between Turkey and Armenia.
Turkish news reports have said Azerbaijan is disturbed by Turkey's and Armenia's efforts toward reconciliation, which could lead to the reopening of their joint border. Turkey closed the border in a show of support to Azerbaijan, which is in conflict with Armenia over the Nagorno-Karabakh region.
A statement from Gul's office said he and Aliev spoke by phone Thursday. A spokesman for Gul said the Turkish president initiated the call.
Gul's office said the two leaders stressed the importance of "solidarity and cooperation" between their nations for regional stability.
