Clinton says China's forced abortions unacceptable

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton is defending herself from charges that she has refrained from criticism of China's human rights record.
Clinton was asked in a congressional hearing Wednesday why she had not criticized China for forced sterilization and abortion.
She noted that she had prominently raised the issue in 1995 in a speech in China when she was first lady. She called the Chinese policies "absolutely unacceptable."
But she added that human rights would be one topic among many with China, and the issue should not upset other diplomatic efforts.
She said, "We have normalized diplomatic relations with nations who engage in policies that we certainly deplore."
