Magistrate seeks adoptive parents for 16 orphans

Taipei, April 2 (CNA) The magistrate of the south-central county of Yunlin said Thursday that she is seeking adoptive parents for 16 children who are awaiting adoption.
Yunlin Magistrate Su Chih-fen called a news conference at County Hall to call for help in efforts to seek adopters for the orphans, who at present are being looked after by the county government.
Su said she is glad that of the 18 children previously under the care of the county government, two have already been adopted -- a 2-year-old boy adopted by an American couple who left Taiwan for the United States last November and a 10-year-old girl adopted by a couple living in Taipei City who has been living with her adoptive parents since January.
The adoptive parents of the girl, named Hsiao-yi, wrote to the county government's Department of Social Affairs recently to say that their new daughter is adorable, well-behaved and works particularly hard at her studies.
"Hsiao-yi was ranked fifth in academic performance in her class this semester," the parents said in the letter.
Hsiao-yi's story can serve as an example to explode an adoption myth that the older the adopted children are, the more difficult the bonding process can be, for both the adopters and the adopted, Su said.
