Communist rebels free 3 Philippine police officers

The Red Cross says communist rebels have released three Philippine police officers they had held captive for 83 days following an ambush that killed one officer and wounded two others.
Anastasia Isyuk, spokeswoman for the International Committee of the Red Cross in Manila, said Saturday the officers were turned over Friday to local officials in Rizal province east of Manila.
Isyuk says the Red Cross acted as a "neutral and impartial intermediary" in the release.
Police Inspector Rex Cuntapay and officers Marvin Agasen and Alberto Umali were captured by New People's Army guerrillas Jan. 3 after the rebels detonated a land mine under their vehicle.
The rebels have been waging a Maoist insurgency for 40 years.
