Taiwanese wins award at Bologna book fair

Taipei, March 27 (CNA) A young Taiwanese illustrator has won an Award for Excellence at an international children's book fair in the Italian city of Bologna for her outstanding handmade embroidery collage, organizers said Friday.
Wu Hsin-huei, who is currently studying in France, was among the 81 winners selected from a field of more than 2,700 international entrants in the competition that was part of this year's Bologna Illustrators Exhibition.
The exhibition was held in conjunction with the recently concluded Bologna Children's Book Fair, said a spokesman for the Taipei Book Fair Foundation (TBFF), which was in charge of Taiwan's activities at the Bologna fair.
Wu said in Italy that her work -- completed after two weeks of relentless effort and titled "Wher's the panda?" -- was inspired by the "strange imaginings" of her friend's children in their bedrooms. She described her work as presenting an "animal world" undiscovered by adults, from the perspective of a three-year-old child.
Since 1989, the work of 25 Taiwanese artists, including Wu, has been recognized at the Bologna Illustrators Exhibition, one of the world's premier international illustration competitions, according to the TBFF. Wu's achievement is another example of Taiwan's progresses in the art of illustration over the past two decades, the TBFF spokesman added.
