Danish parliament approves bridge to Germany

Danish lawmakers have approved building a 12-mile (19-kilometer) bridge across the Fehmarn strait between Denmark and Germany.
In a 104-3 vote with 72 absentees, Denmark's 179-seat Parliament ratified an agreement to build the estimated 32 billion-kroner ($5.8 billion) road-and-rail link. The bridge is to be completed in 2018.
The two governments signed a deal last year that envisions a four-lane highway and a twin railway track. It was not immediately clear when German lawmakers would vote on the agreement.
In 2005, a daily average of 5,800 people took the 45-minute ferry ride across the strait. Official estimates say that 9,200 people would cross the link on a daily basis when the bridge is completed.
