Giant founder, 75, to cycle from Beijing to Shanghai

The chairman and a co-founder of the Giant Manufacturing Co., the world's largest bicycle maker, announced Tuesday that he will set off May 9 on a cycle ride from Beijing to Shanghai.
Making the announcement at the opening of the 2009 Taipei International Cycle Show at the Taipei World Trade Center's Nangang Exhibition Hall, 75-year-old King Liu said he expects to complete the 1,688-km trip in 20 days.
"I am prepared," said the business leader who wore cycling gear in his first appearance at the trade show and displayed a limited edition carbon-fiber road bicycle designed by himself.
Liu admitted, however, that at the age of 75, it will be difficult for him to ride the 80 km a day that will be required to complete the journey in the allotted time, even though he completed a 927-km ride around Taiwan in 17 days in 2007.
He expressed hope that the personal challenge will also help promote friendship and cycling exchanges between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait.
Giant, which has manufacturing facilities in Taiwan, the Netherlands and China, sold 5 million bicycles in 2007, generating revenue of US$820 million.
Liu said he predicts operation revenue will increase by 10 percent this year.
