CHIAYI (Taiwan News) – Alishan Forest Train will suspend its operations for two days beginning Thursday. Hundreds of passengers lined up at the Chiayi Train Station Thursday morning to ask for refunds.

As the Alishan cherry blossom season starts on March 15, a majority of Alishan train drivers announced a joint resignation earlier this week, alleging the poor condition of steel rails and crossties along the line would jeopardize the safety of both passengers and drivers.

The decision of operation suspension is made by the Cabinet-level Forestry Bureau under the Council of Agriculture following a discussion with the operating Hungtu Co.

Chiayi Train Station is packed with passengers demanding refunds this morning, including tourists from Hong Kong and Singapore, who said it was a shame unable to take a ride on the well-known line. Staff from Hungtu Co. has guided tourists to take a bus to ascend the Alishan.

Hungtu Co. vice general manager Teng Hsin-fu expressed apology to the operation suspension causing inconvenience to passengers, and said the company will give a complementary train ticket for another line valid for one year and a set of Alishan postcards to each passenger.

The governing authorities have conducted examinations and supervision on a regular basis to the forest line, which has passed the test every single time, said Teng. However, for the sake of passengers’ safety, the company decided to suspend operations ahead of the cherry blossom season to take a thorough inspection. The service won’t be resumed unless the security of every element is guaranteed, said Teng.
