China says retail sales up 15.2 percent in Jan-Feb

China says retail sales rose 15.2 percent in the first two months of the year, down slightly from late 2008, as consumers hit by job cuts began holding back on spending.
The National Bureau of Statistics reported Thursday that retail sales in January-February totaled 2 trillion yuan ($294 billion).
China did not report separate figures for each of the first two months of the year, citing potential distortions from the Lunar New Year holiday, which fell in February last year and in late January this year.
Beijing is spending billions of dollars to stimulate consumer spending.
