Daimler to pare back work hours on truck lines

Daimler AG says it will pare back the number of hours that workers on production lines at its Mercedes-Benz truck plants are on the job, citing weaker demand from customers and a dip in orders.
The Stuttgart-based company, whose vehicles also include Mercedes-Benz luxury cars, the Smart two-seater and trucks, said Wednesday that the decision would take effect after Easter next month and is a response "to the continuing weak demand and declining level of incoming orders related to current market conditions."
The company said that the short-time work is expected to remain through the end of the summer holidays and will affect some 18,000 workers at plants in Woerth, Gaggenau, Kassel and Mannheim, all in Germany.
The slowdown will not affect workers who build the company's Unimog and Mercedes-Benz Econic lines nor will it hamper production of Mercedes-Benz and Setra buses.
