Darwin article causes flap in Muslim Turkey

Students and teachers at a Turkish university are protesting the removal of an article about Charles Darwin from a state-run science magazine amid concerns that secular views are under threat in the Muslim country.
Science and Technology magazine editor Cigdem Atakuman says she was sacked after she devoted the cover of the March issue to Darwin to mark the 150th anniversary of his writing on evolution, "The Origin of Species."
Secularists suspect the Islamic-oriented government seeks to promote the Muslim version of creationist theory. The government says it backs Turkey's secular principles.
Parliament Speaker Topkan Koksal on Wednesday criticized the decision by the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey to remove the article.
