Eggs hurled at Russian rights activist

A prominent Russian human rights activist said he was pelted with eggs during a news conference Wednesday on prison abuses.
Lev Ponomaryov, head of the All-Russia Movement for Human Rights, said three unidentified assailants burst into the room and threw several eggs at him. He said one egg hit him but did not break.
The egg attack took place at Moscow's Independent Press Center, a frequent venue for news conferences by rights activists and Kremlin critics. Human rights lawyer Stanislav Markelov was shot dead near the press center shortly after holding a news conference there in January, and a journalist was also killed in that attack.
Ponomaryov, who worked closely with Markelov, accused Russian's Federal Prisons Service of being behind the egg-throwing. The prison service could not be reached for comment late Wednesday.
During the news conference, Ponomaryov and former prisoners complained of beatings and other rights violations in Russia's prisons.
Ponomaryov also said that a fake bomb was discovered at the press center, and that the words "They tell lies here" had been painted on the walls of surrounding buildings.
He said two attackers had been detained and one escaped. According to Ponomaryov, a journalist who gave chase to the fleeing attacker returned with his face covered in blood and said he had been assaulted and punched by men who were then whisked away, along with one of the egg-throwers, in a black Mercedes.
