Spanish media heaped scorn on Real Madrid on Wednesday, one day after the team was humiliated 4-0 by Liverpool to lose 5-0 on aggregate and fail to reach the Champions League quarterfinals for the fifth consecutive year.
"Real Madrid blown out of the water," sports daily Marca said of the record nine-time champions.
Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas was widely praised for his performance and nominated as the only visiting player to play well Tuesday, making several spectacular saves that spared the team further embarrassment.
"Saint Iker kept the score from being 8-0," Marca lamented.
The As sports daily ran a photo of a dejected-looking Casillas with the headline: "Casillas did not deserve this."
Real Madrid sporting director Pedja Mijatovic criticized his players' performances and apologized to the team's fans.
"It was a sad and painful elimination ... we didn't exist in the first minute or in the 90th," he said. "We were always out of place. We should be concerned because we've left a bad image. It is my obligation is to ask the fans' forgiveness."
