Azerbaijan opposition to boycott term-limit vote

Opponents of Azerbaijan's president say they will boycott a referendum that could enable him to remain in power for life.
One opposition leader Ali Aliyev said Wednesday the main opposition parties would urge voters in the oil-rich Caspian Sea nation not to vote in the March 18 referendum.
The plebiscite will ask voters to support scrapping the limit of two straight presidential terms set by the ex-Soviet republic's constitution.
President Ilham Aliyev's critics say lifting term limits would represent a step backward for democracy.
Aliyev won a second five-year term in October elections that were boycotted by the opposition. He succeeded his father, who was the Soviet-era Communist Party boss and was president from 1993 until his death in 2003.
