UN reports decline in cholera deaths in Zimbabwe

The number of people dying and infected with cholera in Zimbabwe decreased for the second consecutive week, the United Nations said Wednesday.
The epidemic "appears to be stabilizing in urban areas," but the outbreak remains high in rural areas, according to a report by the U.N. humanitarian office.
The death toll in Zimbabwe has topped 4,000 with more than 89,000 cases since the outbreak of the waterborne disease in August. Its spread is blamed on the collapse of Zimbabwe's water and health infrastructure.
The U.N. said there was a 42 percent decrease in deaths and a 25 percent drop in new cases for the week ending Feb. 21 compared with the previous week.
"It is a positive sign but there is still a very, very serious situation in Zimbabwe," said Matthew Cochrane, a spokesman for the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.
