NATO: 15.6 million Afghans are registered to vote

NATO officials say 15.6 million people have been registered to vote in August elections in Afghanistan.
NATO spokesman James Appathurai says the alliance has been informed that voter registration, which started in October, is complete. He says 4.3 million new voters were registered and 35 to 38 percent of the voters on the list are women.
Afghans are expected to elect a new president and vote for 34 provincial assemblies Aug. 20.
About 12.6 million people in a country of 30 million were registered for the previous parliamentary elections, in 2005.
Appathurai said Wednesday that NATO members are preparing to send thousands of extra troops to ensure Taliban insurgents don't disrupt the elections. NATO currently has 56,000 troops in Afghanistan.
