El Fares wins 1st stage of Tirreno-Adriatico

French rider Julien El Fares won the opening leg of the Tirreno-Adriatico race Wednesday for his first career stage victory.
The Cofidis rider beat Vladimir Duma of Ukraine in a two-man sprint after a long breakaway to take the 147-kilometer (91-mile) stage from Cecina to Capannori.
Italian sprint specialists Daniele Bennati and Alesssandro Petacchi finished third and fourth, respectively, and Tom Boonen of Belgium crossed fifth. All three were clocked as being 12 seconds behind the leader.
Bennati's Liquigas team led the chase but couldn't catch El Fares and Duma. Former Giro d'Italia winner Ivan Basso is also riding for Liquigas after his return from a two-year doping ban.
Fabian Cancellara is the defending champion.
The seven-day race includes a 30-kilometer (18.64 mile) individual time trial on Sunday.
Many riders use the race as a tuneup for the Milan-San Remo, the season's first single-day classic on March 21.
