Officials: US to name envoy for prison closure

Administration officials are telling The Associated Press that President Barack Obama is ready to appoint a special envoy to oversee the closure of the Guantanamo Bay detention camp.
Two senior officials say that veteran diplomat Daniel Fried will be named to the new post in move intended to demonstrate the administration's seriousness in shutting down the controversial facility. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because the appointment has not yet been made public.
Fried currently serves as assistant secretary of state for European affairs. Part of his new job will be to negotiate with other nations for the transfer of Guantanamo Bay inmates who do not pose a threat but who cannot be sent back to their homelands because of persecution risks. Several European nations have said they will consider taking such detainees.
