Cash-strapped General Motors Corp. says it has postponed indefinitely a plan to put a 4.5-liter V-8 diesel engine in its light-duty pickup trucks.
The company cites the poor economic climate.
GM is living on $13.4 billion in government loans and is seeking an additional $16.6 billion.
It had planned to place the Duramax diesel in its Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra light-duty trucks sometime next year. The diesel engine would have been more fuel efficient than GM's gasoline offerings or its current 6.6-liter V-8 diesel.
The company said Wednesday that it is optimistic the 4.5-liter diesel will be an option in the future.
