Taipei flower show opens as prelude to int'l flower expo

Taipei, March 11 (CNA) President Ma Ying-jeou said Wednesday that the government will collaborate with civic sectors to seek breakthroughs in biological technology as part of efforts to develop the local flower production industry and build Taiwan into "the world's island of flowers." Ma made the remarks in his address at the opening ceremony of the 2009 Taipei International Flower Exhibition at the Taipei Arena, which will run through March 15.
The flower industry, whose production value has greatly surged in recent years, has become one of Taiwan's substantial manufacturing sectors, Ma said. According to agricultural statistics, there are currently 14,000 hectares of farm land used for growing flowers in Taiwan, generating an annual production value of NT$12.5 billion (US$362.28 million).
The Taipei flower show is regarded as a warm-up for the 2010 International Gardening and Horticulture Exposition, which Taipei City will host for the first time.
As a result, this month's exhibition attracted the Netherlands-based International Association of Horticultural Producers to hold its spring conference here, alongside the show.
