More women hold policy-making positions in government

Taipei, March 11 (CNA) Executive Yuan Secretary-General Hsieh Hsiang-chuan boasted Wednesday that 24 percent of Taiwan's Cabinet members are female as he applauded women for their outstanding performance in the workplace.
Hsieh lauded women at a ceremony at which 16 government agencies were presented awards from among 312 nominees for actively promoting women to middle- and high-ranking positions or other critical jobs.
The Taipei and Kaohsiung city governments were among the winners.
The awards, being presented for the seventh consecutive year, are given to encourage the trend of inviting female public servants to participate in the policy-making process, and Hsieh said they have helped promote gender equality in government.
He noted that the percentage of female executive officials in the central government has risen from 14.4 percent in 2004 to 16.7 percent in 2008.
Hsieh stressed that promoting gender equality will continue to be one of the government's major priorities.
