Medellin own-goal gives America 1-1 draw

Defender Samuel Vanegas scored for Independiente Medellin, then undid his good work with an own goal to allow fellow Colombians America de Cali to salvage a 1-1 draw at home Tuesday in Group 4 of the Copa Libertadores.
Vanegas put Medellin ahead after 53 minutes, but then headed into his own goal ten minutes from fulltime at the Pascual Guerrero stadium in front of a 5,000-strong crowd.
Vanegas' attempted clearance of a free kick by America midfielder Jhon Valencia only served to flick the ball past Paraguayan goalkeeper Aldo Bobadilla.
The result moved Medellin to three points after three consecutive draws, while America earned its first point after two opening losses. Sao Paulo of Brazil and Defensor Sporting of Uruguay share the Group 4 lead with four points each.
Vanegas opened the scoring from a corner by Paraguayan Isidro Candia when he made the most of poor marking by the America defense to beat goalkeeper Julian Mesa.
Medellin will host America in the return match at the Atanasio Girardot stadium on March 18.
