Deportivo Quito beats Estudiantes 1-0

A late strike from Colombian marksman Leider Preciado secured a 1-0 home win for Deportivo Quito over Argentina's Estudiantes in the Copa Libertadores on Tuesday.
Preciado kept his cool to fire home in the 86th minute, enabling Quito to leapfrog Estudiantes into second place in Group 5 and claim an important advantage in the race for a last 16 spot.
Brazil's Cruzeiro leads the group after three games.
Quito edged the first half, creating the most of the scarce opportunities on goal and keeping the Argentine club under wraps.
Preciado was the first to go close for the home side with a header that slipped wide of the post in the 17th.
Leandro Desabato replied for Estudiantes a minute later with a downward header from a right cross that Bonard Garcia dived to push round the post.
Quito captain Luis Saritama, in doubt before the match because of an injury, dragged a shot wide in the 32nd after a quick free kick caught the visitors' defense napping.
After 38 minutes, Estudiantes goalkeeper Mariano Andujar was called into action to save a free kick curled over the wall by Chilean midfielder Mauricio Donoso.
Estudiantes' frustration boiled over just before halftime when captain Juan Sebastian Veron was shown a yellow card.
Both sides made changes as the second half kicked off in an attempt to inject some fizz into the encounter.
Quito substitute Martin Mandra was into his stride in the 50th, robbing Christian Cellay on the left wing and beating another defender before shooting against the angle of the post and crossbar.
Estudiantes, by contrast, continued to lack imagination in attack and even former Lazio and Manchester United midfielder Veron looked infected by the mediocrity on show.
Quitos snapped into tackles quickly and almost grabbed a goal in the 84th when Mandra got behind the defense but knocked the ball wide as Andujar charged out of his goal.
A minute later, Preciado sprung the offside trap from Donoso's stabbed pass. His deflected shot beat Andujar at the near post.
Mandra then hit the post in the final minute as Quito prepared to celebrate the three points.
The group continues with Cruzeiro facing a home match against Bolivia's Universitario de Sucre in Brazil next Wednesday. Estudiantes hosts Quito in the return match in La Plata next Thursday.
