Violence mars protest on French island Reunion

A protest over high prices on France's Indian Ocean island of Reunion has turned violent with youths hurling stones and bottles and police responding with tear gas.
In the capital of Saint-Denis a handful of youths set fire to trash bins and broke storefront windows during one of several protests across Reunion that have drawn at least 6,000 people.
Authorities say at least 16 people were taken into custody and five people were injured in Tuesday's upheaval.
The protests were smaller but more violent than similar ones on the island last week.
Violence that broke out on two French Caribbean islands in recent weeks has since ebbed.
Reunion's corporate leaders and labor unions plan to hold pay talks Wednesday.
