Russia wants changes in Afghan anti-drug efforts

Russian news agencies say Moscow will push for changes in the way the world fights drugs in Afghanistan.
ITAR-Tass and Interfax report that Russia will present proposed revisions of international strategy at a U.N. meeting that opens Wednesday in Vienna.
The agencies cite Russia's drug control chief Viktor Ivanov as saying the anti-drug effort in Afghanistan is not keeping up with the persistent problem. Afghanistan is the world's largest opium producer and a major source of the heroin used in Russia.
Ivanov gave few details of the proposal, but indicated there should be broader international control of anti-drug operations.
Moscow has been sending mixed signals about its willingness to help the U.S. and NATO in Afghanistan.
