Retired Pa. judge gets 46 months in jail for fraud

A retired Pennsylvania Superior Court judge has been sentenced to 46 months in prison for falsely collecting $440,000 from insurance companies.
Sixty-year-old Michael Joyce was convicted in November. Federal prosecutors say he exaggerated neck and back injuries from a fender bender to collect the insurance money.
Joyce has maintained his injuries were real, even if he golfed, went scuba diving and learned to fly a plane after the wreck.
Joyce also was ordered on Tuesday to pay restitution to the insurance companies. He also must forfeit his bank accounts, his suburban Erie house and his Harley Davidson motorcycle. After his release, Joyce will be on probation for three years.
Joyce retired from the state appeals court in January 2008, a few months after being indicted.
