Lufthansa, cabin attendants reach pay deal

Deutsche Lufthansa AG agreed Tuesday to raise its cabin attendants' pay by 4.2 percent, a deal that will help the German airline avoid strikes.
The agreement with the UFO union that represents some 16,000 Lufthansa attendants will give those workers a retroactive raise beginning Jan. 1. It also provides for a one-time payment based on 2008 profits and the employee's salary level.
UFO official Joachim Mueller said he was satisfied with the deal.
"In light of the economic crisis, it's a very proper amount," Mueller said.
The union had sought a 6.1 percent pay increase and improved benefits. Its members staged warning strikes over two days in January that forced the cancellation of more than 120 flights.
On Monday, the union's members had voted to stage a new round of strikes for several hours at short notice.
