Nobel prize winner to head new Yale institute

The chairman of a United Nations panel that won the Nobel Peace Prize has been appointed to lead the new Climate and Energy Institute at Yale University.
Yale President Richard Levin announced the appointment of Rajendra Pachauri (rah-JEN'-drah paw-CHOOR'-ee) on Tuesday at a conference in Denmark.
Pachauri accepted the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007 on behalf of the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, which shared the honor with former Vice President Al Gore. He will retain that position while taking up his new half-time position at Yale.
Initial projects will focus on forecasting climate variability and its impacts on water supplies, as well as studying the spread of infectious diseases, searching for alternative fuels and the science and economics of carbon sequestration.
