Biden suggests non-European can be NATO chief

U.S. Vice President Joe Biden says the next NATO secretary-general doesn't necessarily have to be a European.
The political post is usually filled by someone picked from the European members of the 26-nation alliance since NATO's military operation is headed by a U.S. general.
Biden said Tuesday in Brussels that the U.S. doesn't "think that as a matter of policy any member nation should be ruled out as being able to provide a secretary-general."
Canadian Defense Minister Peter Mackay has been viewed as a candidate to succeed NATO Secretary-General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, who steps down in July. Other potential candidates include Danish Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen and Polish Foreign Minister Radek Sikorski.
