Lufthansa carried 9 pct fewer passengers in Feb

Germany's largest airline, Deutsche Lufthansa AG, saw a 9 percent drop in passengers in February compared with a year earlier as the world economic crisis deepened, the company said Tuesday.
The Cologne-based airline said it carried 4.7 million passengers in February 2009, compared with 5.2 million in February 2008. Besides its namesake brand, Lufthansa's airlines include Swiss International Airlines, and Germanwings.
The group passenger load factor, a measure of how full airplanes are, fell for the month to 72.1 percent from 75.4 percent in February 2008.
In response to the weaker demand, the airline cut capacity by 9.4 percent in the U.S. In Europe, the group cut capacity by 4.9 percent, while in the Asia-Pacific region, Lufthansa cut capacity by 4.5 percent.
Lufthansa said its cargo division also saw business decline.
Cargo tonnage fell nearly 25 percent to 109,000 metric tons from 145,000 metric tons in February 2008. The load factor for the month fell to 57 percent from 68 percent in 2008.
In response, Lufthansa cut total cargo capacity by 8.4 percent.
