The top health official in the Sri Lankan war zone says at least 49 civilians were killed and hundreds more wounded in new fighting between the government and ethnic Tamil rebels.
Dr. Thurairaja Varatharajah said 279 wounded were brought to the makeshift hospital he runs in the area by the afternoon Tuesday, and 43 of them died because of lack of adequate care. He said another six bodies were brought to the hospital's morgue.
Tens of thousands of civilians are trapped in a tiny strip of land along with the rebels.
Varatharajah said many were wounded Tuesday when heavy rains flooded the bunkers and forced the civilians into the open. He said that over the past 10 days 218 civilians died in the hospital from their wounds.
