One of the top stars caught in a celebrity sex photo scandal that shocked the Chinese-speaking world last year launched her comeback Tuesday, trying to salvage a career badly damaged by images of her performing sex acts with an actor.
In her first endorsement deal since the scandal, Gillian Chung of the Hong Kong female pop duo Twins attended a press conference on Tuesday to promote a jeans brand.
With shoulder-length permed hair, the 28-year-old actress wore a purple T-shirt that said "tough." She unveiled a billboard ad that showed her with a serious expression, surrounded by models who wore masks of monsters.
"This was a very long year. It was very hard to get through. I was lucky to have many people who supported me," Chung said.
Chung and seven other female Hong Kong stars were seen performing sex acts with Chinese-Canadian actor-singer Edison Chen in photos that were leaked onto the Internet early last year, causing a huge uproar in the socially conservative Chinese-speaking community. A Hong Kong computer technician is being tried for allegedly stealing the photos from Chen's laptop.
Wong Yui-lam, chief executive of the Hong Kong fashion retailer Bauhaus International (Holdings) Ltd., said Tuesday he tapped Chung to promote his jeans line because he admired her ability to weather adversity.
"Ms. Chung's optimistic and hardworking attitude can bring out the message of being tough," Wong said.
Chung said she has also been picked to do ads for a Chinese skin care company she didn't identify.
Chung's manager, Mani Fok, said Bauhaus was paying the actress at least 1 million Hong Kong dollars ($130,000), and denied rumors she had taken a steep discount from her usual fee to jump-start her comeback.
