Taiwan's population tops 23 million

Taiwan's population was recorded at around 23.05 million at the end of February, showing an increase of 75,785 from the same month a year ago, according to the latest statistics made public by the Ministry of the Interior (MOI).
The offshore county of Kinmen had the largest growth rate at 4.255 percent over the previous year, followed by Hsinchu City with 1.629 percent growth and Hsinchu County with 1.487 percent.
Meanwhile, the biggest negative population growth rate, minus 1.869 percent, was recorded on Matsu Island under the administration of the Lienchiang county government, followed by Taitung County with minus 0.727 percent.
In terms of households, Taipei County had the largest number at 1.34 million, accounting for 17.52 percent of the country's 7.68 million households. Taipei City had the second-highest number of households at 958,573, and Taoyuan County was third with 638,810 households.

Taipei, Taoyuan, Hsinchu are in northern Taiwan, which is more populous than the southern areas.
The statistics also showed that in February, there were 17,159 births and 15,877 deaths and that 9,137 couples got married last month, while 4,947 got divorced.
