Secular Turkish journalist charged in coup plot

A newspaper says a court has charged and formally arrested one of its journalists for ties to an alleged secularist plot to bring down the Islamic-oriented government.
The pro-secular Cumhuriyet newspaper says Mustafa Balbay, the paper's Ankara representative, was jailed on Friday. He is accused of being part of an alleged secularist group which prosecutors say was planning an armed uprising. Balbay was detained for questioning on Thursday.
Eight-six suspects _ including journalists, politicians and retired army officers _ are already on trial in the case. Dozens more have been arrested and await trial.
Many see the case as the latest battle between the Islamic-oriented government and secularists, who consider themselves the protectors of Turkey's secular system.
