Japanese tourists exploring Hualien

Taipei, March 5 (CNA) A group of over 100 Japanese tourists arrived Thursday in eastern Taiwan's Hualien County on a charter flight of the Taipei-based China Airlines for a four-day pleasure trip.
The more than 100 Japanese tourists from Fukuoka in Japan's Kyusyu took the flight from the Kitakyushu Airport and landed in the Hualien airport after a two-hour flight.
The number of tourists in the group made it one of the biggest tour groups to visit Hualien.
Hualien County tourism officials extended a warm welcome to the Japanese visitors at the airport and briefly introduced to them popular local tourism destinations, including Taroko Gorge and the East Rift Valley.
Since Hualien County began promoting charter flights to lure foreign tourists in 2001, there have been about 180 charter flights departing from Hualien to Japan, South Korea, and the Philippines, according to county government statistics.
A majority of the flights -- 111 of them - were bound for Japan, with Japanese tourists accounting for more than half of the overall passengers.
Japanese tourists have always been the focus of Hualien County's efforts to attract foreign visitors, said the county's tourism bureau chief Lin Bo-shu.
